The elaborate artwork for the new Radiohead album is yet again set to become a collector's item as Hail To The Thief is revealed in the form of a road-map.

The group, who based the artwork to last album 'Amnesiac' on an old library book, have designed and made 'Hail To The Thief' in the format of a road map and a number of early copies of the album come in the form of a real fold out map, as pictured on the right. The sleeve also gives an alternative name for each song.

Speaking exclusively to NME, Thom Yorke explained the thinking behind it. He revealed that in the political fall-out of the September 11 attacks on the US and subsequent war in Afghanistan, certain phrases used on the radio stuck out to him.

I was listening to lots of Radio 4, he said. Whenever I heard words that rang bells in my head, I'd write them down, until I had this really long list, which is basically much of the artwork.

Yorke has also told the BBC that he was reduced to tears on hearing new single There There finished for the first time. The track has had a famously long gestation period, and at one point was considered 'lost' by band insiders.

I blubbed my eyes out, he said. I went to LA and Nigel played me the mix and it just made me cry, I was in tears for ages, I just thought it was the best thing we had ever done. There was something about it, I loved what he did.

At one time I thought it was the song that we were going to lose which I was really upset about because the melody stayed with me for about four months without going away, which is really unusual as it doesn't take me long to get bored and I really never got bored of this song.

Radiohead - Internet friendly

Radiohead were always loyal to internet and to the opportunities the media gives. In support of their new album rh makes a new promo web site, www.radiohead.tv, on which more and more information would be available with every day closer to the release. The first thing to be soon seen would be an hour long video containing some video art, fans' drawings, internet blips and so forth.The site starts its work on 28th of April.

Up to the 9th of June - the moment of international release of there 5th studio album ( ??? ) more and more stuff will be put on the web - the album tracks, the covers of the singles and the album itself, games, etc. The musicians even decided to give their fans an opportunity to distantly scare their friends: you just have to type your friend's mobile number into a special form, push the button and he/she will recieve your message - a scary scream Hail To The Thief! sweet, isn't it?

And for internet gamers there will be a special treatment - a labirint-game containing several levels. Those succeeded to win would personally meet the musicians.

Besides, a forum will be open on the site, where anyone can leave his/her questions for Thom Yorke and Co. and to recieve an answer. If the questions are interesting, they always answer. Is true.

The guitarist appears on 'Enemy Of The Enemy', and now ADF have been confirmed to appear on the Pyramid Stage the same day Radiohead headline (June 28), the dance-rock collective's Steve 'Chandrasonic' Chandra Savale hopes their pal will be happy to reprise his role in front of thousands.

He said: I've heard some of the new album, I thinks it's really imaginative stuff, they are really pushing the boundaries, again.

He added: I always look forward to Glastonbury, we haven't done it for about three years.

ADF have also announced they will be performing at the Lee 'Scratch' Perry-curated Meltdown Festival, which runs from June 10-29 on London's South Bank.

Yes, the title is a reference to the 2000 elections. I've listened to this almost nonstop for the past week. This is my favorite album since Manic Street Preachers' Know Your Enemy. Keeping their distance from contemporary rock sounds of any sort, this is a throwback to when the term alternative meant something melded with electronic music (not electronica). In the vein of Kid A and Amnesiac but even more so, raw rough edges dominate and there is an ethereal quality to Thom's voice throughout. Radiohead creates encompasing soundscapes with a minimalist set of tools and a lot of odd syncopation. This is real alternative. Not due until June, put on your wishlist now.

Hot Spots: Where I End And You Begin, A Punch-Up At A Wedding, Myxomatosis, Scatterbrain, Go To Sleep, Sit Down Stand Up, We Suck Young Blood, The Gloaming. Yes, that's pretty much the whole album.

So I’m a music pirate, kill me! I’ll be buying this album the day it hits stores so I’m not really feeling all that guilty anyway. This album leaked and, through what I would consider a stroke of good fortune, I was able to snag it in its entirety from a friend’s FTP server.

For those pop fans of Radiohead, i.e. those of you who only like songs like Creep, Karma Police, etc, you probably won’t love this album though you may like it. For those of you who are really into the experimental work the band has been putting out, namely in the last couple of years with records like Kid A and Amnesiac, then you’ll welcome this release with widely open arms and you’ll embrace like a cold but loving robot that beats its way into your musical heart with slicing guitar riffs, acoustic undercurrents, hypnotic beats mixed with traditional drumming, and so much atmosphere you could breath in it.

The advance word was that this album was a return to the rock of the group's 1995 album The Bends, but once a band has evolved as far as Radiohead has, it is impossible to go backward. So while Hail, due in June, may be more song-oriented than recent Radiohead albums, it incorporates elements of the drive, the drone, the drift and the dance of all the group's previous CD's. Exquisitely layered yet stubbornly minimal, Hail, like much of the band's other work, slowly opens after multiple listens.

The group will return to the British Isles after overseas festival and tour dates to end the year with a full tour of bigger UK venues in support of their new album Hail To The Thief, which is released in the UK on June 9.

Although final details are currently unconfirmed, sources have told NME the shows will take place in late autumn time and in venues much larger than their May club dates, which are 2500 capacity in size.

A source close to the band told NME: This tour will be a much bigger affair. They are looking at huge venues. They wanted to do the small shows first to warm-up, but these gigs will give anyone who was disappointed the first time around the chance to see them. November is the most likely month.

Radiohead are planning to span the globe in support of Hail To The Thief, playing in Europe throughout the summer months, before hitting Japan and the US in August.

These festivals usually have some televison coverage, although we can't tell if Radiohead will be included in the broadcasts.

As we all know tickets on Radiohead summer shows have been re-sold on the internet in very high prices.

A Radiohead spokesman said that any fan caught selling their tickets on Ebay would have theirs cancelled, as the tickets weren't due to go out until shortly before the event.

Meanwhile, the band have reacted angrily to the prospect of their fans being forced to pay hundreds of pounds to see the gigs.

Michael Eavis, the founder of the Glastonbury festival, claimes that he has a system of preventing tickets being sold at inflated prices, but refuses to elaborate on how it would be done. We're getting on to Ebay and Ebay can apparently stop the sale of tickets that are bring offered at these extortionate prices: he told Radio 1.

Ebay claims that there is little it can do. And only if a promoter takes out an injunction against a specific seller will it entertain the idea of removing a listing. We cannot keep a copy and refer to every contract that is claimed to have been breached by a listing, and we aren't able to make an exception for event tickets: says the spokesman.

This is just a quick post. I too am disappointed that the album has already been uploaded onto the net. We don't like anybody to hear our recordings until we are completely happy with them. These mixes of the songs were still 'work in progress'. As such, we wouldn't have chosen to present the album to people in this form. I feel that the recording process has been compromised for us. Its not that these mixes are bad, its just that the actual album is better - honest.

The ambient rock group's guitarist said Thursday the songs were stolen and he doesn't want people to get excited about them because they aren't finished.

But Pat Cardinal, station manager and program director at rock station 104.9 XFM, insists any publicity is good publicity in the battle to stay competitive with fans sharing music for free on the Internet.

This stuff isn't supposed to be released for three months but it's all over the Internet and we can't ignore it, he said Thursday. What's dangerous is if listeners start going online to hear new music, we have to be there no matter what.

In the past, the station has played unauthorized tracks by a host of artists, but this time Cardinal said the station downloaded and aired Radiohead's entire forthcoming album, Hail to the Thief, due to be released in about three months.

Cardinal posted on the station's Web site a cease-and-desist order from EMI Music Canada, the band's Canadian label, ordering XFM to stop airing unauthorized Radiohead tracks.

XFM was the only Canadian radio station to play the pirated material as far as EMI was aware, said Anastasia Saradoc, the record label's spokeswoman.

We don't want to infringe on the copyright, Triple J's music director, Arnold Frolows, said yesterday. This was a one-off event. Were not interested in ripping off an artist's work three months out.

The British band's album, titled with what must be unintended irony as Hail to the Thief, is not due for release until June9.

In what has become standard practice for major releases, security was so tight that media were not to receive the CD until the day of release to prevent pirating and the only copy in Australia is in the office of the EMI managing director, John O'Donnell.

However, late on Sunday night, all 14 tracks were posted on various websites. And by Monday morning - while copies of the album were being burnt by net-savvy fans and EMI's London head office was unaware of the worldwide breach of its security - TripleJ had played three of the songs downloaded by a staff member.

It was like a found object, Frolows said when asked if there had been any ethical dilemma. As fans it was more about getting excited about finding something like this and we thought, 'what can we do, we have to play it on the radio'.

At EMI, the security breach was a concern, Mr O'Donnell said. He said that when Frolows called EMI to advise that the songs were about to be played, we spoke to them and [made TripleJ> aware it was infringing copyright and could short-change the band by hurting sales of the album.

However, although EMI was involved in a rolling process of encouraging websites to remove the material by reminding them of copyright legislation, Mr O'Donnell said there were no plans to take action against TripleJ - described as Radiohead's traditional home - nor to bring forward the album's release date to thwart further pirating.

Even this year when record companies, led by EMI, have begun large-scale use of copy protection technology to prevent copying of CDs on home computers, Radiohead's experience is not unique.
