Bassist Colin Greenwood, guitarist Ed O'Brien and drummer Phil Selway came into the Zoë Ball show yesterday (May 28), to talk about ‘Hail To The Thief’. When asked about the writing and recording the album, O'Brien explained the process started when Thom Yorke presented the band with demos.

He sent us three CDs of everything, he explained, One CD was pure electronic stuff he’d done, through to renditions of songs we were aware of over the past three years just on acoustic guitar or piano. So we lived with them for two months, then got back together and said: Right what songs does everyone like?


Then we started rehearsing them, which is when they stop being Thom Yorke songs and become Radiohead songs. The whole point of this album was to record it as quickly as possible, rehearse it well, play them in live, and record quickly in a very, very basic way. So we did.

I always think the last record we do is the best record we’ve made, but personally speaking after all that pressure, Kid A is probably the most pure record we've made. But then again I know people who think The Bends is the best record we’ve done. So whatever. Its nice to know that you can make records as good as the one’s you made before.

Having gone through the whole show without glitch one of the floor managers was waiting for confirmation from the technical people 'upstairs' that the recording was OK. On eventually announcing that Radiohead would need to repeat There There, loud applause erupted from the audience.

The second performance of There There seemed to have an extra energy (on being asked by production staff if there were any differences in the set up Thom said that his cheeks were much redder!). The live version has an awesome beat with Jonny and Ed both playing two drums (as well of course as Phil on the kit). Ed seemed delighted to have broken two drumsticks during the performance.

Phil was dressed very smart - looked like a brown pinstripe suit! Think Nigel Godrich was there too.

All in all the band seemed very relaxed and seemed to enjoy the other performances.

Other people on Jools were: Ibrahim Ferrer from Buena Vista Social Club, Zwan, Martina Topley-Bird, Pat Metheny and a duet of 'Young, Gifted and Black' (written by Nina Simone). Other people in the studio were Kelly MacDonald, Miranda Richardson, Steve Wright and Peter Saville.

Suffice to say, everyone seemed to have come to see Radiohead.

In a blow to Beastie Boys and Radiohead fans, Suffolk County has denied a mass gathering permit for a two-day rock concert in Calverton, meaning for now the event can't go ahead.

But the promoter contends the permit was wrongly denied and insists the Field Day Festival will go on June 7-8, as planned.

A meeting between Riverhead Town Supervisor Robert Kozakiewicz, Police Chief David Hegermiller and a concert promoter is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. this afternoon at the concert site.

Meanwhile, an environmental group sued Riverhead Town and the event organizers yesterday, charging the town didn't do a proper environmental review before leasing the site to the concert promoters in February.

County health officials denied the permit yesterday after Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller told them his force wouldn't be able to handle the crowd - which is expected to number up to 40,000 people each day - without the help of the Suffolk County police.

But county police told Hegermiller Friday that they wouldn't offer extra officers because doing so would require an agreement between the Riverhead town board and the Suffolk county legislature.

The legislature doesn't meet before the concert. Kara Gerry, spokeswoman for Suffolk presiding officer Maxine Postal, said calling a special meeting to consider the concert is highly unlikely. Peter Scully, a spokesman for County Executive Robert Gaffney, agreed.

Bruce Williamson, chief of the county health department's public health protection bureau, said the town and promoters simply approached the county too late. There's just very little time to do this right now, he said.

Field Day is still on. With out going into detail, and not meaning to sound arrogant, Field Day is too big to cancel and the city will have much more serious problems not accommodating Field Day (riots, law suits, revenue loss for the town, etc.) than it will accommodating Field Day. So rest assured everything possible is being done to ensure Field Day goes on just as planned.

We are moving ahead with efforts to keep the Field Day Music Festival on track. This notice of denial was premature and we are continuing to work closely with the Town of Riverhead and Riverhead Police with ongoing meetings scheduled for this evening.

Obviously we are disappointed by this decision but it appears to be based more on procedural issues than substantive problems. We believe we can resolve this issue quickly so that we can stage a festival that benefits the town, the county and a world wide audience that seeks to come to Calverton.

Prior to the June 10th release of Radiohead's new album, Hail to the Thief, MTV.com will present The Leak, making the entire album available on the site from June 2nd through the 10th. Additionally, two-dollar tickets will go on sale for the Radiohead MTV2 2$Bill concert on Saturday, May 31st at 12 noon at the Beacon Theatre box office in New York City. The Radiohead 2$Bill concert will air exclusively on MTV2 on Tuesday, June 17th at 9pm (ET). MTV2 will also air a special Boxed Set collection of Radiohead videos, as well as air short 'blips' of the new Radiohead video for 'There There'. MTV2 will also provide live wall to wall coverage, including interviews and performances of the first annual Field Day Festival on June 7th and 8th, from Long Island, New York, where Radiohead is headlining.

Two weeks before the release of Hail to the Thief, Radiohead have posted four finished tracks from the much-leaked album on their Web site, capitolrecords.com/radiohead.

Available for streaming are the album's first single, There There, A Punch Up at a Wedding, the piano-based ballad Sail to the Moon and the driving Myxamatosis, named after a disease that killed British rabbits. The video for There There, which debuted last week on the Jumbotron above New York's Times Square, is also posted on the site.

The band was frustrated earlier this year when unfinished versions of Thief tracks were leaked to the Internet. It's like having your house done over half way through having it done up, bassist Colin Greenwood said at the time. All the attention is gratifying, but we want it when all our hard work's done and the best it can be.

Since then, other versions of the album have also been leaked. The finished set marks a return to artful rock songwriting for the band. We wanted to relearn the art of putting out shorter songs, guitarist Ed O'Brien told Rolling Stone. On tour in 2001 in America, I think we learned to swagger as a band. We wanted to capture that on record.

For the political leaders of Riverhead, a municipality stuck with an unfortunate image as The Little Town That Couldn't, it was impossible to resist the opportunity to host two giant rock festivals in June and August. So they didn't resist. Now all Long Island should hope that these outdoor music events turn out to be a cultural and economic development dream come true, and not merely a traffic nightmare, or worse, a disappearing mirage.

There's little question about the appeal of the acts. Field Day Music Festival, with music on June 7 and 8, features favorites such as Radiohead and the Beastie Boys. Bonnaroo NE 2003, with performances Aug. 8 to 10, will include The Dead, Bob Dylan and many others. Together, they could draw over 100,000.

The good news is that the crowds may increase the town's visibility and perhaps direct attention to its property at the former Grumman facility at Calverton, the site of the festivals. The town has sold the nearly 500-acre core, which leaves 2,400 acres to be sold. If the festivals provide exposure that later leads to advantageous sales of the remaining acreage, that alone would make them worthwhile.

The bad news is that large crowds of fans, on top of normally heavy traffic, could create monumental gridlock. Both promoters have hired experienced consultants to ease the crush. Also, both festivals will allow campers to start arriving the day before the music starts, which should spread out the flow of cars. Still, the traffic is likely to be difficult at best.

The greatest problem is this: With the first concert less than two weeks away, the town has yet to receive the necessary permit from Suffolk County. That won't happen without an intermunicipal agreement, allowing Suffolk police to supplement the town's tiny force. The promoters will pay the bill for this policing, but they can't cut the check until the two governments reach agreement. That requires action by the town board and the county legislature, but the legislature is not scheduled to meet again until after the June event. Riverhead signed the contract for the June event on Feb. 20. So it should have moved the permit process much farther along by now.

Meanwhile, both promoters have been selling tickets for the events. The county won't rule out the possibility that the two governments won't be able to complete all the details in time for the June permit to be issued. If that happens, thousands of angry ticket-holders won't remember the word Riverhead fondly.

The town already has a reputation for inability to get its act together, and this hasn't helped its image. It didn't adequately anticipate the bureaucratic hurdles and coordinate with other agencies quickly enough. Nor did it pay sufficient attention to environmental concerns, such as potential damage to migratory birds. So now it faces a new hurdle: a lawsuit by the Long Island Pine Barrens Society.

Some officials would like to see the concerts go away, but that's too harsh. If they can be put together right, they might very well provide a long-term cultural and economic benefit to the region. But first, Riverhead must work hard, and quickly, to get the permit that it needs. Let it become The Little Town That Could.

And that means the Waterfront Arena and Wonderland Promotions could be flooded with calls from all over Europe.

For when singer Thom Yorke and the rest of the group played a sell-out gig on Monday night the cheers that were ringing out for the music were multi-lingual.

Fans flooded in from France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Spain, America and Canada, and even Japan, revealed Wonderland's Anita Gibney today.

Visitors from at least 13 countries we know about can't be bad on the one night.

And, of course, the backbone of the audience was made up of home-based followers of the band.

Tickets for the gig were sold worldwide, exclusively on the Radiohead website.

And the band's multi-national fan base were quick to snap them up.

The concert was sold out weeks ago but calls were still pouring in pleading for tickets only days before they arrived here.

Belfast was a hit with the band as they went on with their UK tour, said Andrew Kyle, marketing chief at the Waterfront.

They want to come back and we are trying to make an arrangement once their touring commitments have been fulfilled.

British rock group Radiohead has plans to boost music sales by reaching out to fans through mobile phones.

Next month, members of Radiohead plan to reach out to fans directly over mobile phone networks on the same day they release their new record, said Vijay Chattha, spokesman for San Francisco-based IPSH!net, which developed the promotion campaigns.

-There There video was shot in the 50 Acre Wood outside Bristol, and was directed by Chris Hopewell. 4 days filming, and 2 weeks to do the animation. The brief was: "a bit Brothers Grimm, a bit Jan Svankmajer [Czech animation legend>". Thom: "It's bagpuss"

-Colin, on the concept of the new artwork: "It's comprised of the five colours used on American road signs, and black and white". "The record is all fluorescent, opaque sounds, like road signs-clear, coming at you out of the darkness."

-Thom's favourite film: Being There with Peter Sellers.

- Noel Gallagher said that "protest is a wast a time", Thom answers (after a pause and a smile) "He needs to read some books."

-Thom: the gloaming is "The imminent sense of moving into the dark ages again. The rise of all this Right-wing bigotry, stupidity, fear and ignorance."

Chris Martin also recorded a track with Radiohead, but it won't appear on the band's upcoming disc, Hail To The Thief, due June 10. Instead, Neptune and the Blues is expected to show up as a B-side to one of Radiohead's upcoming singles. It's a brave move for Martin, since many critics regard Coldplay as nothing but a Radiohead knock-off.

Like Radiohead, Coldplay is a socially and politically conscious group.

There There will screen throughout Tuesday on the Jumbotron at the southern end of Times Square. It also will air on MTV2 at the top of every hour for 24 hours Tuesday before going into general rotation.

Typical of Radiohead's twisted, creepy imagery, There There features lead singer Thom Yorke wandering haltingly through a dark forest, where he spies on animals getting married and having a picnic. Then crows chase him, and as he tries to run away, his feet become rooted to the ground and he turns into a tree.

The band will be embarking on a full tour of the UK and Ireland in November.

Radiohead's second gig in Dublin was even better than the first. Tonight the sound quality was much better. The band also played a different set, but still left out new album track I Will. Like the evening before Radiohead started with There There and 2+2=5, with Thom taking pictures of the crowd. Morning Bell (Flamenco handclapping by audience)) and Scatterbrain followed up and weren't played last night. Another change was introduced by Thom as This is the one with the really different keyboard part, which was Kid A. Rarely played live and indeed a very easy instrumental part for Thom.

Other new songs compared to the night before were: Climbing up the walls, No Surprises (Thom with a funny voice: The guitar ain't working. it ain't working. is your guitar working?), Talk Show Host, We Suck Young Blood (Thom taking photos again), Street Spirit (fade out) and a stunning Fake Plastic Trees. Paranoid Android was announced as a dangerous song (Danger! Danger!).

Last night's gig was again sold out and the venue was packed, including U2's Bono and The Edge. Some hours after the gig, Thom took some time for fans waiting outside the venue. The band will play in Belfast tonight.

Even before they'd picked up their instruments, it was clear that this was going to be a special night. As the five members of Radiohead trotted on at the beginning of this, the first night of a short tour of small venues, they had the air of athletes limbering up before a big event - twitchy, hyped-up, focused - while frontman Thom Yorke, famous for being one of rock's most notorious miserabilists, was actually grinning broadly. They just couldn't wait to start.

U2 star THE EDGE was in the audience to watch the second night of Radiohead's club tour of the UK and Ireland last night (May 17).

As previously reported, the group are playing a number of gigs, their smallest UK shows in years, prior to the release of their new album Hail To The Thief on June 9.

The band debuted two new songs, new album tracks Backdrifts and The Gloaming. All members seemed in very good spirits, although the sound quality wasn't that good. The set and the perfomance however was amazing. Radiohead played their first gig since their Portugese and Spanish shows last summer.

Radiohead kicked off with There There at about 9pm (Four Tet was supporting). 2+2=5 and Where I End And You Begin followed. Then Thom said: Thank you very much for having us. This is Airbag. After Airbag and Lucky, new track Go To Sleep was next. Apparantly, Thom's guitar ain't working, so Thom asked for it's brother. The song featured Jonny with an excellent performance which even got the other band members amazed.

Thom broke a string in Just, which was the oldest song played last night. A phone rang during You And Whose Army. Thom quickly added the word Telephoneto the song. The National Anthem was followed by Hunting Bears. During set closer Everything In It´s Right Place, Thom sat on stage for a while, watching the audience. The encore started with The Gloaming, which was amazing live. When Thom asked if the Irish drink a lot of beer at weddings, the audience replied with a loud and definitive YEAH!!!

Thom was in a vey good mood and so he joked around during Paranoid Android. The band came back for a second encore including Karma Police and How To Disappear Completely. The last song got a loud cheer when I float down the Liffey passed. This was the last song as well, unfortunately. Overall, another classic Radiohead performance in a beautiful, but just a bit too crowded, Olympia Theatre.

The final, mastered version of Hail To The Thief has been leaked online.

Early versions of the songs, said to be stolen recordings of early work, have been available on the web for a number of weeks - however the final album had, up until yesterday been kept under wraps.

Yesterday, the final version of the record, not due for release until June 9, found its way online. A spokesperson for the band was unavailable for comment.

We wanted to relearn the art of putting out shorter songs, says Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien. Keeping it succinct instead of taking the listener on a journey.
On their sixth album, Hail to the Thief (due June 10th), Radiohead return to the masterful songwriting of their early work but flavor it with the experimentation of their last two CDs, 2000's Kid A and 2001's Amnesiac. Songs pulsate, skitter electronically and turn into distorted gospel numbers -- but they also rock.

On tour in 2001 in America, I think we learned to swagger as a band, O'Brien explains. We wanted to capture that on record. We also didn't want to spend too long in the studio.

The group recorded Thief primarily over a marathon two-week session in Los Angeles with their customary producer, Nigel Godrich. The results are stunning, such as on the opener, "2 + 2 = 5," which builds from droning blips into passionate rock. Its lyrics include the title phrase "Hail to the thief," which O'Brien says is not intended simply as a reference to George W. Bush.

Other highlights include the fuzzed-out "Myxomatosis," which takes its name from a disease that killed British rabbits, and the yearning ballad "I Will," on which singer Thom Yorke is accompanied by just a keyboard.

While Thief is gloomy, the recording had one bright spot, according to O'Brien: This is the first album where, at the end of making it, we haven't wanted to kill each other.

A poster campaign asking "Begging for a break? Would you do anything? We suck young blood. We want sweet meats" appeared in the US this week. Who were the perpetrators?

A: British band Radiohead, in an apparent parody of televised talent shows such as Pop Idol

B: "Los Vampyros", a shadowy chapter of Californian Hells Angels, who are reportedly eager to attract new members

C: Controversial US rock star Marilyn Manson, who wants to recruit willing volunteers to assist in a new, gore-laden stage show

It’s hard to be a music critic and have an opinion about Radiohead. It’s like being a priest with an “opinion” on Jesus. The guy built the church. He died for you sins. He’s on your necklace for Christ’s, um, sake. Since the release of OK Computer in 1997, Radiohead has been the yardstick against which the progress of music in a “modern” age is measured—a “modern” musical age which owes a significant portion of its own self-concept to that very album. Bands come and go, while the ubiquitous media cry of the “Next Radiohead” falls upon the ears of a deaf public who won’t buy the hype. And they shouldn’t. Because the truth is, even Radiohead isn’t the next Radiohead.

And they know it.

Can you talk about why it came out as an urban oriented project?

Justin Timberlake: The reason why this feels so urban is a combination of many different things. Obviously, you know, going back to the beginning of this record, the making of this record, this is the music that I enjoy. I've been influenced by so many different people, but all involved in things that people classify as soul music - Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, but at the same time I love 70's rock. I love modern rock. I love Coldplay, I love Radiohead, I love hip-hop. I love Jay-Z. I love Eminem. I was one of Notorious BIG's biggest fans and still am. So I have so many different tastes in music, not to mention that my favourite album of all time is 'Off the Wall'. So you put all this Michael-Prince-Stevie-Marvin-Donny Hathaway-Radiohead-Coldplay stuff together and this is kind of what it turns into, is basically this record. Now, you take that a step further, you know, I think when the record company heard the record they were a bit surprised at the music I had done because it was so different from everything they had ever associated me with NSync. And in making this record I honestly didn't play any of it for the record company until I had finished all of it, and I give them the utmost respect in having faith in me to kind of just go on my own and do it myself and then bring it to them. So I think when they heard it they decided to make a conscious effort to treat this like an urban record because that's exactly what it is. And many, many times with music in moving forward in society we break colour boundaries and we break all different types of boundaries. So this is just another attempt to do that.

Radiohead will include two further brand new tracks as B-sides to new single There There.

The package, out May 26, will be available on CD and 12". Both formats offer new tracks Paperbag Writer and Where Bluebirds Fly, neither of which or on the forthcoming LP Hail To The Thief.
