Radiohead star Thom Yorke led the protests at the CND rally in Yorkshire this weekend (September 25), claiming that Tony Blair's support for George W Bush had been giving him "sleepless nights".

Yorke was billed as the one of the key speakers at the ‘No to Star Wars’ CND rally which took place outside the RAF Fylingdales Warning Base in Yorkshire, near Whitby. Fylingdales is an essential part of the new US ‘Star Wars’ missile defence system, and is the sole official 'Star Wars' base in the UK so far.

The rare public appearance from Yorke guaranteed a larger-than-usual turn out, with travellers both young and old coming from as far as Japan and America for the protest. Yorke chatted candidly to Radiohead fans before stepping up to the podium to deliver a brief speech.

He told the crowd of nearly 400: Neil (Kingsworth of Yorkshire CND) has given me stuff to read about this that’s kept me asleep at night. How dare Tony Blair sign us up to 'Star Wars' without even giving it a really serious thought…without even consulting us? It’s sickening. It’s important that people like us can get off our backsides and come to these events. We need to make it clear that we will not let America govern the world we live in. Let’s make this a good, positive day.

A new statement from CND has confirmed that Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke will be speaking at their anti nuclear weapons demonstration at US base Fylingdales in Yorkshire on Saturday (September 23).

As previously reported on Xfm, in an online message Yorke had said he was attending the campaign for nuclear disarmament’s 'No to Star Wars, Keep Space for Peace' demonstration.

Now in a new CND statement confirms that the Radiohead singer will be speaking alongside the chair of CND, Kate Hudson and Dave Knight (from the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space) at the event.

While he recognizes the difficulties for the average listener, he is often frustrated by the conservatism of fellow performers. “They dismiss anything that is too challenging, that they don’t know how to approach on their instrument. Even some music that is over 100 years old is still too new.”

Expanding the soundscape is a musician’s responsibility. “If all you had ever heard was Beethoven,” Richardson says. “What would you do when you first heard Radiohead?”

Richardson and his bandmates are also planning an arrangement of a song from Radiohead’s “Amnesiac.” They’d presumably avoid track 10 from Radiohead’s “OK Computer” — a song called “No Surprises.”

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has sent a message urging fans to join a protest again Bush’s Star Wars programme next week at the Fylingdales Base. By way of invitation to the rally, at which Yorke will be speaking, the singer asked Anybody want to come? on the official Radiohead message board.

The demonstration will take place next Sunday (September 25) at the Fylingdales base and Yorke is just one of the guest speakers set to be present at the protest against George Bush's planned announcement of the Star Wars program this October.

International laws currently ban the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction from being used or tested in the atmosphere and beyond its limits, (including outer space), however a loophole does allow other weaponry including anti-satellite weaponry, lasers etc. and it is these in which Bush has expressed an interest, hence, Star Wars.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke joined his pals R.E.M. onstage at their secret London show tonight (September 15).

Yorke appeared onstage at the St James' Church halfway through the set to join Michael Stipe on vocals for a version of the US band’s 1996 UK Top Five hit ’E-Bow The Letter’, Yorke taking the part Patti Smith sang on the studio version.

R.E.M. had to restart the song after Stipe claimed I was so excited I fucked up the beginning, before going on to apologise for swearing in church.

Yorke, who has been friends with R.E.M. since Radiohead supported them on the 1995 ’Monster’ tour, had previously sung the same song onstage with R.E.M. at Vancouver Thunderbird Stadium in August last year.

The 200-strong invite-only audience gave Yorke a storming ovation, and they also responded enthusiastically to the seven songs R.E.M. performed from forthcoming album ’Around The Sun’, out on October 4.

Among the new tracks were the three the band played at the Make Trade Fair charity gig last night at London Hammersmith Apollo (’Boy In The Well’, ’I Wanted To Be Wrong’ and new single ’Leaving New York’). Tonight R.E.M. also premiered ’Wanderlust’, the album’s title track and ’Aftermath’, though ’Final Straw’ featured in the setlists on the band’s 2003 tour, most notably at Glastonbury.

Radiohead are putting their time off from recording and touring to good use – with drummer Phil Selway doing his bit for charity.

Selway is currently supporting The Samaritans’ new volunteer recruiting campaign ‘Extreme Listening’. The emotional support group are aiming to encourage more young people aged 18-24 to volunteer. The Samaritans’ campaign is being carried out through postcards which are being distributed in Ibiza, as well as posters throughout the UK.

Selway explained: There’s the common misconception that at that age you’re too young to do the work, you haven’t got enough experience, but age isn’t a barrier. The campaign aims to show the link between listening to music and expressing emotion. The Samaritans are suggesting that through becoming a volunteer, you get to experience another form of powerful listening.

The drummer, who has been a Samaritan for 18 years since joining university, said: The experience that you need is to listen properly and effectively – give people the space to examine their own feelings. The whole Samaritans thing is about getting alongside someone who is really trying to understand what they’re going through.

Selway added: Working with The Samaritans has been a profound experience for me. It’s the knowledge that hopefully you’ve made a positive difference to someone’s life when they’ve been going through a crisis.

We'll learn their history and interpret their music at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, USA. In the class, I'll be exposing the students to nearly every song Radiohead has written, in addition to their music videos, Radiohead TV, MPIE, etc. With homework and class discussions, we'll talk about the themes, literature references, etc that permeate their music, from On a Friday through whatever leaks in the next few months.

Vauxhall and I, however, stands as fascinating aberation in Morrissey's solo canon. A moment when it really seemed as though something was about to happen, be it reinvention, retreat, or something even more final. Among its admirers when it was released were Radiohead- themselves undergoing somewhat of a crisis whilst attempting to eclipse the success of Creep.

You can hear that album all over the Bends, said Thom Yorke in an interview last year. It was all we listened to.
