what this site counts

Privacy

What Treefingers keeps about you and your visits, and how to switch the counting off.

Treefingers is run by one person, Miro, as a hobby. It counts its visitors so I can see what people read and use, and it keeps what members choose to give it. Nothing is sold or used for advertising, and nothing is shared beyond the services named below.

If you sign in

You sign in with a link sent to your email address, or with Google, which tells the site your email address; the site keeps nothing else Google sends. The site's emails, the sign-in link among them, are sent through Amazon SES, a mail service, from its Sydney region. Your account holds that address, the name you choose, your fan card (a song, a show, a lyric and a few words about you), the shows you mark, the memories and guest book entries you write, and your finished Daily Bends days. Your email address is never shown to anyone. Your name, your memories and your guest book entries appear on the site once they are read and published; your fan card appears only if you make it public. A guest book entry written before you sign in waits on the site for a day, and is deleted if you do not sign in to send it.

Signing in sets one cookie, which keeps you signed in for up to a year and does nothing else. Signing out removes it. To get a copy of what your account holds, or to have it deleted, write to me at the address below.

Notes and the contact form

A message or a file sent through the contact form comes to me as an email (sent through Amazon SES) and is not stored on the site. A note sent with "make a suggestion" is kept so I can act on it, together with the page it came from, your browser's name and version (to reproduce a fault), and your name and email address if you give them.

The Daily Bends

Your games are kept in your own browser. It sends each finished day's score to the site as a plain tally, with nothing about who played, so the result can say how everyone did. If you are signed in, your finished days are also kept on your account so your streak follows you; nobody else can see them.

In your browser

The site keeps a few things in your browser's own storage: the light or dark theme you picked, your Daily Bends games, a guest book entry you have not sent yet, and your analytics choice below. None of it leaves your browser except what is described above: each finished Daily Bends day, and a guest book entry, which waits on the site for a day until you sign in.

Videos

Videos come from YouTube, through its privacy-enhanced mode. Until you press play, the picture you see is a copy hosted here and nothing is fetched from YouTube. Once you press play, the video loads from YouTube and its own privacy policy applies.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics counts the pages you read, the page or site that sent you here, your country and city (worked out from your IP address, which Google does not keep), and your device and browser. It also counts these things you do here, so I can tell which parts of the site are worth more work: playing the Daily Bends, pressing play on a video, what you search for, how far down a long page you read, marking a show you were at, leaving a memory or signing the guest book, signing in, sending a note, and which links take you elsewhere.

It sets a cookie (_ga) so that a second visit from the same browser counts as a return rather than a stranger. It never records your name, your email address or the messages, notes and memories you write here; the only words it keeps are the ones you type into search and the list filters. Its advertising features are switched off, so nothing here is used to show you ads, here or anywhere else.

If you are in the European Union, the UK or Switzerland, the cookie stays off until you switch it on below. Until then, Google gets a visit with no cookie and no way to connect it to the next one.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Cloudflare, which serves the site, counts page views and how fast each page loads. It sets no cookie and keeps nothing that could tell one visitor from another, so it runs for everyone.

Your choice

Switch Google Analytics off, or on, for this browser. The choice is kept in this browser only. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, it starts switched off.

With JavaScript off, nothing is recorded at all.
