Thom Yorke on MusiquePlus
A song that succeeds stops being yours, one of them says, which is why playing “Creep” for ever does not frighten him.
3 November 1993 · MusiquePlus · Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood
On MusiquePlus, a Montreal music channel, to introduce the “Stop Whispering” video, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are asked whether they are scared of playing “Creep” for the rest of their lives. Not really, one of them says: a song that succeeds is in some ways not yours any more, and there is room to improvise in it. Jonny explains why he didn't like it at first. It was quiet all the way through, and the anger in the words wasn't coming over in the arrangement. He apologises to Thom for probably never telling him this; Thom is surprised Jonny could hear the words at all, and Jonny knew the title. Jonny's guitar noise was not hatred of the song, one of them says, but a way of changing it. They went to America first because Britain's one route for a new band is “an insult to new bands”.
