Thom Yorke on Canal+

If grunge means Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead are no part of it, one of them tells French television.

24 November 1993 · Canal+ · Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are asked on Canal+, the French television channel, why the song they have just played swings between calm and noise, and one of them says it is just like them. “We seem like calm nice well behaved English chaps, but occasionally we can be very noisy and annoying and upsetting.” Asked if they are part of grunge, one of them says not if it means bands like Stone Temple Pilots; he heard nothing exciting in Seattle that the Pixies hadn't done in Boston two years earlier, and Sonic Youth before that. Every scene has died, one of them thinks, and journalists are desperate enough to make scenes happen where there were none.
