Radiohead on Deadeye video magazine

Thom Yorke talks to Deadeye, a video magazine, on the day the band play a charity gig for Rwanda, between Pablo Honey and The Bends. The talk ends as the camera battery runs low, with Yorke recording a trailer for the magazine.

The myth he would most like to shatter is the angry young man with nothing to be angry about. He admits he is a sulky little git whenever the press are around, because he hates them, which rather reinforces it. Music journalists, he says, are like school bullies who decide on something and that's it. Pablo Honey is flawed because they were very young, had hardly played as a band, had never really been in a studio and had just signed to a huge label. Half the reason they are called Radiohead, he says, is a world where everybody just receives information, and where you no longer ask the man in the record shop what something sounds like but are told what to buy in HMV or Our Price.

He is wary of the Rwanda gig itself. Pop stars who think they can change the world are, to him, mostly pop stars with a bad conscience, and he has never heard one point out that the West sold the arms in the first place. R.E.M. making speeches at Clinton's inauguration leaves him scratching his head. Songs are therapy, and some things he has put in them are so personal he can't look at them again. He has been putting himself on show since he was five or six, when he exhibited his Lego models on the front of the television for people to admire. Why the outsider? “It's cos the people inside are jerks.”
