Radio 1's Evening Session gives The Bends a week of nights, a different part of Radiohead each evening, and Thom Yorke, ill on the last of them, calls the time since Pablo Honey “frustrating to the point of complete madness”. At an MTV Latino show he spent half a day arguing that he would not play “Creep”, lost, and stopped after the first two or three bars. Jonny Greenwood says touring one record that long is “like writing a book and just promoting it for three years”. The new songs were written on tour, he and Yorke taping them in dressing rooms while the others soundchecked in another building.

Ed O'Brien first heard “(Nice Dream)” on a tape of Yorke's in the car, the two of them driving to see their girlfriends in Bristol, played it eight times, and reports that it is his dad's favourite. Colin Greenwood, it emerges, has been thrown out of the band's wine society, and he and Phil Selway tell how “Planet Telex” was made in a single evening at RAK, a London studio, with John Leckie, who produced The Bends, after a few drinks, from Selway's drums cut up on a computer and Yorke and O'Brien playing with effects. Offered a song for the soundtrack of The Jerky Boys film, the prank-call act behind the Pablo Honey title, they turned it down, and the film, they say, was by then the third biggest grosser in America.
