Thom Yorke on BBC Radio 1
Yorke has to consult his bits of paper to confirm what Radio 1 already knows, that Radiohead play Glasgow Barrowland on 31 October.
24 July 1995 · BBC Radio 1 · Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke has been awake for about five minutes when Radio 1's Evening Session rings him, just off the bus at a club called Call the Office in London, Ontario. He is enjoying touring, sleeping on the bus and never washing, and there are a lot of Canadian dates because Radiohead are, he has been told, quite big there. The presenter already knows they play Glasgow Barrowland on 31 October, then Leeds, and Yorke has to consult his bits of paper to confirm it. Every night of the first British tour after The Bends sold out, with people knowing the songs within a week of release, and “I smile on stage now and like crack jokes and stuff”. The presenter says he will come and check, because he finds that very hard to believe.
In a lot of ways The Bends feels to Yorke like a first record, a relaxing into what they do after the constant conflict of writing “Anyone Can Play Guitar” and “Creep”. The next one, he guarantees, won't be more of the same. Then he goes back to sleep.
