Asked whether he would rather have been born in another era, Thom Yorke picks the 1960s for the obvious reasons and notes that none of that can be done any more. “Creep” was one of their best songs until the new album arrived, he says, and playing it now feels less like playing one of their own songs than covering a standard, which he seems fine about.

The Bends, he says, is about a total loss of connection, with the music business but also with home, with his own life and with the people in front of him. The image he reaches for is a mothership drifting through the stratosphere attached to nothing. He does not leave it there, and describes the record as coming out the other side of that and celebrating it.

He calls the received wisdom that everything has already been done a neurosis the media keeps feeding, and rejects the idea that a band has to justify itself by listing its influences so that everyone can place it quickly.
