Thom Yorke and one of the others talk about The Bends in 1995. The title track was the first song they had for it, and it existed on a four-track in Yorke's cottage while they were recording Pablo Honey. One of them doesn't know why they never recorded it then. Yorke was completely taking the piss when he wrote it, and then it all started happening and the joke wore thin. John Leckie, who produced The Bends, is like a long lost uncle to them. They arrived fragile, and when they asked what he thought he would say he didn't know, they were the band, and he would tell them when they were going wrong. Until then, one of them says, they had only had a day here and there, or two and a half weeks for the first album, and he took the mystery out of the studio.
