1995 · source not known · Radiohead

A short television interview about The Bends, with two of the band answering. The title track was the first song they had for the album; one of them remembers Thom Yorke with a four-track version in his cottage while they were tracking Pablo Honey. Its writer was taking the piss when he wrote it, and the joke wore thin as everything in it started happening. Of all the video directors they talked to, only one, Jake Scott, understood “Fake Plastic Trees”.

John Leckie, the producer, is a long-lost uncle to them, who stopped the studio feeling like a science lab. They came to the record fragile, to put it mildly. Asked what he thought, Leckie would tell them they were the band and it was theirs to decide, and that he would say when they were going wrong.
