Radiohead on MuchMusic
The “Paranoid Android” video works, Thom Yorke says, because its hero climbs a lamp post and carries on while a man below swings an axe.

MuchMusic follows two of the band round a used electronic parts shop, where the find is a one-dollar voltage detector with a red light for danger and a green one for okay, and nobody knows what to do with it.
Thom Yorke then explains the “Paranoid Android” video. The song was written about an innocent, naive character surrounded by frightening chaos and trying desperately to hold himself together, and the film does the same. Robin climbs a lamp post and stays oblivious while drinks are poured on him and a man below tries to hack him down with an axe. “He's there but he's not, and that's how I felt when I wrote the song.” He sums up the rest as sex and death in a nutshell.
Living now is like being in a room full of television screens, he says, which is how he feels most of the time. In the 80s one of Britain's most lucrative exports was weapons and torture implements, and now it is Radiohead, Oasis and the Spice Girls. One of them is trying to stop bitching about other musicians, because everyone is fighting for a tiny bit of space, and it will be someone else's next week.
