7 June 1997 · MuchMusic · Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood

Backstage at the second Tibetan Freedom Concert, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood tell MuchMusic this is about the only benefit they would agree to, because the cause is clear-cut. Artists, one of them argues, are among the few people outside politics and corporate money who can be heard. The new Labour government's first moves included a ban on exporting cattle prods and other instruments of torture, which one of them hopes is the start of a lot of good things. Touring the world hardly widens their view, one of them says; it is more about bothering to read a newspaper. America's media is closed for a free country, so a newspaper has to be read actively. “It's not just what they're saying, it's how they're saying and it's what's not being said.”
