Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are in Montreal for the first time in about 18 months, and Yorke is amused by how uneven the touring has been. The band recently played to 600 people after turning up with an articulated truck and three tour buses, and in the same stretch played Glastonbury to some 30,000 and a Dublin show with Massive Attack to closer to 40,000.
Glastonbury, he says, is not about meeting other bands. The job there is to provide the soundtrack to everyone else's excesses, and from the stage it felt closer to Apocalypse Now.
They were terrified releasing OK Computer. They had worked on it for 18 months without once thinking it strange, and were not ready for it to be received as difficult.
Most of the album, Yorke says, is accident. A band sets out to do one thing, something else happens, and they recognise that the something else was what they wanted in the first place.
