Ed O'Brien on BBC Radio

Ed O'Brien is on BBC London around the release of Kid A, and spends a surprising amount of it looking back. A 1992 single reminds him of a television recording day when about 10 bands were put through one studio in a single session, which he calls a sausage factory, and which is how bands of that time got on television.

The first thing they did with their advance was spend £4,000 on a van, fit it with old Rover seats and a bulkhead, and tour Britain in it for 18 months. It was bought second hand through a newspaper, and had been built for a purpose the band were not entirely comfortable with once they worked out what the fittings at the front were for.

He also kills a story that had been going round since a magazine piece, in which he arrived after OK Computer wanting the band to make three-and-a-half-minute pop songs as a corrective. That is nonsense, he says; whatever was said came up while they were mulling things over in rehearsals for an Amnesty show.
