Thom Yorke

Asked what happened after OK Computer, Thom Yorke does not soften it. The interview is cut into a film with footage from the European tent tour.

He ended up, he says, somewhere he did not want to be, not recognising himself and no longer interested in what the band was supposed to have achieved. Two years of writer's block followed, work started and thrown away, which he compares to a bereavement.

Music had always been how he moved forward, so losing the ability to make it took away his ability to progress at all. It became circular, with every record he put on, every book and every drive confirming he was stuck and would not be anything else. The way out, as he tells it, was unromantic. Eventually he stopped attending to it.

He felt finished by Glastonbury, and they carried on for another 18 months. By the end, he says, they played badly because nobody was interested or listening to anyone else.

He cannot play OK Computer for pleasure, not because of the music or the words but because it returns him to that place.

Kid A was made with no method, from unformed ideas and the hope that some would see themselves through.
