Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke would rather a song on the radio than a white gallery room where posh people drink wine and think about buying.

A European television film broadcast the year after Kid A came out, cutting a long interview with Thom Yorke, recorded during the 2000 tent tour, into clips from one of their London concerts. Back from the OK Computer tour he was somewhere he did not want to be, and did not recognise himself. Two years of writer's block followed, starting things and throwing them away, which he likens to losing someone you love. Music was how he had always moved on, so without it he was trapped, “like a full stop”, until he chose to stop having a problem about it and went out with his friends. Only when Kid A was finished did he see the block had been anger at losing control of his life.
He was finished by Glastonbury in 1997 and they toured another year and a half, playing badly by the end. He cannot listen to OK Computer, because it sends him back. Rock's mythology he cannot stand, and he points to the Rothko room at the Tate, where children see the joy of the colours and adults see a man who killed himself.
He lost interest in the guitar, played piano badly and listened to Autechre, Aphex Twin and Warp. Remain in Light had obsessed the band since OK Computer, and David Byrne's fragments gave him the idea of keeping his failed lines, cutting them up and pulling them out of a top hat, which is why the words are not printed. “How to Disappear Completely” is older, a mantra from the OK Computer tour. Asked about the band's relationships, he refuses, because it is nobody's business. He still wants Radiohead to be part of pop music; since art college he has hated the thought of work hung in an empty white room for posh people to drink wine in front of and think about buying, when a song on the radio can change you for good. Left to himself he would not have toured again; he liked the idea of the tent because it sounded bloody-minded, but never thought it would happen. Then people bought tickets.
