Thom Yorke on MuchMusic
Asked why a rock and roll superhero always comes home, he says it is where he left things.
April 2001 · MuchMusic · Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke does his MuchMusic interview with no eye contact, the interviewer's idea, and goes along with it. Amnesiac, he says, is mostly about being trapped in one loop in your heart or your head, like the faces of drivers stuck in traffic. Made at the same time as Kid A, it fills in the blanks for anyone who could not connect that record to OK Computer, a link he finds completely logical. He wanted songs that did not lean on his own voice at full emotional pitch.
His baby son Noah, “apparently he looks like me, poor sod”, wants his mother, and Yorke is “absolutely rubbish at the moment”. The interviewer suggests a Japanese invention, a bra with milk sacs for fathers. “I'm just not going to answer the door like that, am I?” Why does a rock and roll superhero, the interviewer's phrase, always come home? Because, he says, that is where he left things.
