Thom Yorke on MTV (Germany) 'Spin

Thom Yorke talks to MTV Germany's Spin late on a Friday night in Oxford, the day the “There There” video was finished, and says Hail to the Thief was the most fun the band have ever had in a studio. Most of it was done in two weeks, a track a day, and on purpose, because the last two records were a real headache.

The others tell him he is singing again. He did not plan it, but on the last two tours singing became the thing that stopped him cracking up, close to spiritual, the reason he is there at all, “not to go to the supermarket” or to sign autographs. He saw the same in Michael Stipe every night on tour with R.E.M. He worries for Coldplay and the Strokes going through what OK Computer did to Radiohead, and is enjoying the fact that “I haven't been hit by a car yet and I'm still doing this”. He reads nothing written about the band. The one thing that would make him give up music for ever is having to deal with Sunday-supplement critics and their opinions for the rest of his life.

“There There” was hard only because they wanted it to feel a little like being electrocuted. He thinks it the best thing they have done, though the others might not, and the mix made him cry. The video plays on the children's-story clichés of being trapped in a wood, and after four days of acting he is looking for a Hollywood agent. His favourite Radiohead video is still “Karma Police”, and MTV Germany play it to close the show.
