Julie Slater of K-Rock in New York gets Thom Yorke on the phone in Madrid, on a day off from a European tour, to announce Radiohead's two nights at Madison Square Garden on 9 and 10 October, which neither of them quite manages to do. Yorke says he never listens to his own records: he does not recognise them, could not make them again, and hearing a spontaneous record over and over in the mix is bad for the health.
The next record, he says, will jump somewhere quite different; this one was about being a band playing in a room. He worries that his right hand has started making rapper's gestures on stage. He jokes about losing PETA's sexiest vegetarian vote and rules out politics, since he could not take an oil company's money and then attack it. He remembers the Liberty Island shows, where the crowd went mad for “The National Anthem”, just before 11 September, and says places like that are harder to get now because some people find them inconvenient.
