Thom Yorke on BBC Radio 1

Letterman keeps his studio at sub-zero temperatures so he won't sweat, they explain, and on their recent visit their hands went numb.

21 November 2003 · BBC Radio 1 · Thom Yorke, Ed O'Brien

Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien spend an afternoon on Mark and Lard's Radio 1 show with “2 + 2 = 5” the current single, eating their lunch on air: a battered cod for O'Brien, and mashed carrots with a vegetarian corn chilli for Yorke. Later Yorke takes a guitar from the 1940s out of its case and plays “Follow Me Around”, a song kicking around since OK Computer that is not out yet. He is not sure what to do with it.

Is it true they will only make EPs from now on? They have been talking about it, because they are difficult, and might put out about 40. One of them owns up to being the band's drinker, Yorke admits he knows nothing about rugby, and a rumour that the band sweat together in a sauna is a lie. Asked about his student days in Exeter, Yorke remembers a club, since closed, where his band of the time, the Headless Chickens that week, played with the ground floor under water. “It was literally a watering hole because the ground floor was flooded,” he says, and he got a shock every time he went to the mic.

The show runs another episode of its parody serial, Tom Yorke's School Days, while Yorke is out of the room, and O'Brien says it did not go down too well in the band. Bruce Forsyth, met on Jonathan Ross's show, stayed to the end, posed for photos with them and signed books, a proper gent. If they looked annoyed on David Letterman's show a few weeks earlier, it was the cold: he keeps the studio at sub-zero temperatures so he won't sweat, and their hands went numb. The set changes every night, chosen by “whatever's giving us the horn that day”. After this tour there are no firm plans. They liked the Darkness's cover of “Street Spirit”. Asked about Paul Oakenfold's version, they move on.
