Radiohead on Maida Vale Studios
After Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood play acoustically, Zane Lowe puts questions to the band from the room and from listeners' emails.
They had done about four of these stripped-down shows that year and still treat them as a novelty. Asked whether they often pull old songs out and rework them, they say they do it for fun, along with covers, and mention a Neil Young song they had played recently, with the audience helping on the solo.
The emails bring a persistent rumour that the band were writing an opera, which gets the seriousness it deserves. The one real collaboration on the table is with Merce Cunningham, whose company had asked to work with them, and they take care to describe it properly rather than as interpretive dance.
Near the end Yorke says one of the hardest things that year was accepting that people saw the record as something that took effort. He rejects that entirely. Everything they do is aimed at the mainstream and the high street, he says, and making music to sit in some obscure vacuum has never been the point.
