Thom Yorke on MusiquePlus

Asked whether the band will act in videos again, Thom Yorke promises dance routines and describes a scheme involving safari uniforms that he says he has failed to sell to the others.

On whether the band's changes of direction happen to all five at once, he says everybody is always pulling in different directions, which causes adjustment periods, and he is glad of it, because he would be worried if they were still listening to the same records as seven or eight years earlier.

He was asked recently whether he was clinically depressed, he says, and his instinct was to answer yes, since it would make a better story and spare the journalist disappointment. Whatever he had said would then have been believed.

That leads to the British tabloids and their power to finish people. He compares it to public execution. Nobody needs to hang anyone now, he says, because dragging them through the papers leaves them alive but unable to leave the house. Underneath it he sees a national appetite for watching somebody suffer.
