Thom Yorke on BBC Radio 2
Yorke reckons people paid about four pounds on average for the In Rainbows download, and calls them very kind.
26 January 2008 · BBC Radio 2 · Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke sits in with Jonathan Ross on a Saturday morning on Radio 2, plays “Reckoner” and “Everything in Its Right Place” on his own, with Ross's jokes in between. In Rainbows went out the way it did because every record they made had leaked one way or another, so they leaked this one themselves, and people could hear it as soon as it was finished instead of waiting three months. He reckons the average paid was about four pounds; people, he says, are very kind. Stanley Donwood made the artwork by throwing a lot of ink and wax around.
Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood has just been ruled out of the Oscars on a technicality. Yorke has seen the first 20 minutes of the film. “It's what you'd call a heavy mother.” Nobody minds when one of them goes off on their own, because “we've known each other since 16, it would be a bit odd to start getting upset about it now”. He has wanted to be in a band since he was seven or eight, and as a boy he drew the instruments, not the people. “I've always had trouble with faces.” When a song is finished is the others' call. They take it off him just before he pulls it to bits, and he is the last to know. Kid A upset people only because it didn't sound like OK Computer, and a lot of ravers liked it.
Ross reminds him that he and Jonny promised to write a Eurovision entry. They did put out feelers, Yorke says, and “we were told that certain elements of the Eurovision establishment might take offence”.
