Thom Yorke on Esperanza Garcia
Friends who have sat through years of climate negotiations tell him nothing has changed.
17 December 2009 · Esperanza Garcia · Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke is at the Copenhagen climate summit to watch, he tells Esperanza Garcia, having campaigned for a climate bill in Britain and wanting to see where it led. He is glad Brazil walked out and that the developing world will not take a compromise. The rich nations came with nothing and expected to get their way, and “their behaviour has been utterly shameful and disgusting”, though not all of them. He wants the summit's press release to be a list of the countries that are not playing.
Asked what he will do at home to make a difference, he turns the question round. “This now has to be a global political decision,” he says, and he is sick of hearing what people can do personally; without laws that everyone knows, it is fruitless. Friends who have been to the negotiations for years tell him nothing has changed: the people at the talks “keep saying the same thing yet they know they've run out of time”. He has two children, and he is very angry.
