Radiohead on Dave Fanning, RTÉ
Dave Fanning sets out how Kid A came about: the trips to Paris and Copenhagen to decide what came next, Thom Yorke arriving convinced that tunes were finished and rhythm was everything, and a record that landed a long way from OK Computer. Then he asks whether it caused fights.
There were no rows, comes the answer, but there was self-doubt of a specific kind, about what a member of the band is for if he is not playing guitar. That, and not any quarrel with the direction, is where the difficulty started.
The rest is about leaving the safety zone, the uncertainty that comes with anything new, and finding a way back in until it feels like five people working as a band again. Yorke arriving with a fixed idea was stimulating rather than divisive, and the right thing at the time.
