Jonny Greenwood

Just before the world premiere of Doghouse, Jonny Greenwood and the person who liaised between him and the orchestra talk to the presenter on stage.

The idea came from music libraries full of scores for radio shows of the 1940s and 50s, written to be played once and lost. He has never been to one and suspects it would be disappointing. He thought about texture, because it was about the last period when music was written on paper and left to decay. The title comes partly from a tip he was given as a child for finding D on the piano, a dog living in a house, and everything in the piece seems to fall around that note. There are three soloists, on violin, viola and cello, because he did not have the nerve to write a real concerto for one instrument. The five movements run as one, named mostly after where they were written. His first piece for the orchestra, Popcorn Superhet Receiver, went into the score for There Will Be Blood, and this one is going into a new film, Norwegian Wood. Then Charles Mutter, Timothy Welch and Benjamin Hughes come out to play it.
