Phil Selway on BBC Radio 2

Philip Selway brings his band into Mark Radcliffe's Radio 2 show to play three songs from Familial live, and the last of them, “All Eyes on You”, came out of the autumn of 1993. “Creep” was all over MTV, and a band who had begun the year unnoticed in a Transit were suddenly meant to be professional. “I felt incredibly fraudulent,” he says. Nerves wrecked his timing for the whole tour, and the others noticed and were understanding.
The songs found their first listeners at Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide sessions, where he was well down the bench of drummers. He sat where everyone had to walk past and played quietly, a little louder each time someone went by, and the song he took to KT Tunstall and Bic Runga was “The Witching Hour”. Bringing a song to Radiohead would be a cardinal sin, and until a couple of years ago he did not think he could sing. Kath Mann taught herself the musical saw she plays on “Running Blind”. Selway once spent a weekend in the Devon woods for Ed O'Brien's stag do, learning the woodsman's crafts.
For show and tell he brings the first single he bought, at about 12, the Police's “Message in a Bottle”, heard on Mike Read's breakfast show. Radcliffe says nobody in Radiohead ever seems to compete. “We were all at school together,” Selway says.
