Phil Selway on BBC 6 Music
Electric Picnic comes first, then Bestival and End of the Road, two festivals he has never been to, and dates opening for Wilco.

Philip Selway talks to Lauren Laverne on 6 Music in the week Familial comes out, and says holding the finished record was exciting, when at points it had seemed unlikely to happen. Ideas began coming through about seven years ago, and three years ago there was a collection of songs that felt too personal for Radiohead. So he decided to make a record without knowing if he could sing or having the lyrics finished, and backfilled from there. Laverne suggests a midlife crisis. “I think a yellow sports car is next,” he says.
The players are people he met on Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide, made in New Zealand at Christmas 2008 for Oxfam: Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg, and Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone of Wilco. That was where he first sang in public. With so many drummers there he kept slipping down the list, so he found a spot in the studio and played his songs, and everybody picked up on it. When he recorded his first vocal, Jim Scott produced and told stories about Johnny Cash, and KT Tunstall and Bic Runga helped on vocals. The title came after a couple of weeks with the master, when he saw the record was about the relationships that feed into you, family, colleagues and friends.
Radiohead have been working on and off for a year and get back together at the end of September. Nothing is finished, but it is coming along nicely. First come Electric Picnic this weekend, then Bestival and End of the Road, two festivals he has never been to, and some dates opening for Wilco. Asked whether big rooms will feel intimate after Radiohead, he says he will have to let her know in a couple of weeks.
