Ed O'Brien on BBC 6 Music

Even Richard Branson, he says, would find it very hard today to get the licences an online record shop needs.

4 May 2011 · BBC 6 Music · Ed O'Brien

Ed O'Brien tells BBC 6 Music that peer-to-peer sharing used to find artists a listener has never heard is closer to radio or Spotify than to piracy. He has given six songs away for free in the past year, and “I sometimes wonder what industry I'm in.” He still buys CDs, and bought eight records from Rough Trade East's top 20 before Christmas. Even Richard Branson, starting an online record business today, would find the licences very hard to get. What he wants is micro-payments and licensing simple enough that “some kid who's got the best taste in the world can start an online record store”.
