Jonny Greenwood on Polskie Radio
Jonny Greenwood, a day from sharing a stage with Krzysztof Penderecki, admits he has borrowed some of the composer's ideas.
8 September 2011 · Polskie Radio · Jonny Greenwood
Jonny Greenwood talks to Polskie Radio the day before he joins Krzysztof Penderecki on stage. He first knew Penderecki's music at college, then went to a concert Penderecki conducted, stood at the front and gave him a standing ovation. To Greenwood he is a hero who learnt electronic music and then went back to the orchestra to make those sounds with violins and violas. Asked what his part will be, he talks of sweating and feeling self-conscious. He expects Penderecki to notice that he has borrowed some of the composer's ideas.
On 11 September he plays Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint at the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków. Plenty of guitarists, he says, use the piece to show off every sound they can make; he wants to play it as a pure piece for one simple electric guitar. He calls himself a pretty clumsy guitar player. “My manager over there is nodding as I describe myself as clumsy.” He also touches on Radiohead copying Miles Davis.
