Ed O'Brien on BBC Radio 1
“Staircase”, the other new song from the From the Basement session, goes to 6 Music the next morning.

Ed O'Brien rings Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 from the car, driving back from rehearsals, on the night the station first plays “The Daily Mail”. The song has been kicking around for at least six years. It came together when The King of Limbs, with only eight tracks, left them two songs short for From the Basement and a week to find them. With Clive Deamer on drums, a brass arrangement by Jonny Greenwood and everybody already knowing it, they played it through about five times, and what goes out tonight is live with no overdubs, refreshing after the studio head of The King of Limbs. “Staircase”, the other new song and closer to the sound of The King of Limbs, goes to 6 Music the next morning.
Next year Radiohead play arenas, which they have done only once before, on the OK Computer tour, a time after Glastonbury 1997 that was a blur and not much fun. They will not turn into a jukebox playing the hits; there will be old songs, but it doesn't feel as though they have to play “Paranoid Android”. A week and a half into rehearsals, he won't give more away. “We're going to be doing something different, let's put it that way.”
