7 January 2013 · BBC Radio 1 · Nigel Godrich, Thom Yorke

Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich with Zane Lowe on Radio 1, the first time the new studios have had cameras in them, on their first day back at work in 2013 and seven weeks before Amok comes out on XL. Atoms for Peace began for a laugh, as a band to play The Eraser live, and something else was going on as soon as they were in a room. The others had written all the beats out on bits of paper before Yorke walked in, which one of the three in the studio likens to Madonna arriving to find the dancers two months rehearsed. The hairband Yorke wore at Fuji Rock came from Luke Wilson in The Royal Tenenbaums, he wants it known, not from Mark Knopfler.

After their first tour they felt short of material, so at the end of it they spent three days in a studio playing non-stop, building a mountain of grooves out of tiny pieces from Yorke's laptop. Then he and Godrich had to work out what it all meant, about two years of it. Working from chunks of music, you have to make your decisions very quickly, and Godrich, Yorke says, sees a thing when it presents itself; Yorke “will unravel and look at it until it blows my brains out”. Playing The Eraser live had meant a band imitating a machine, the way disco drummers once copied drum machines, and Godrich puts it better than he does.

Shows will happen, Europe certainly, worked round the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea's other band, and the baby Joey Waronker, the Atoms for Peace drummer, has on the way, but not Glastonbury, not as the whole unit. They have recorded a couple of tunes at Jack White's tiny red, black and white studio, and Jack White, they add, was once an upholsterer. What does Godrich say in the studio? “Not yet,” says Yorke.
