Nigel Godrich on BBC Radio 1
Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich spend most of their time with Zane Lowe taking the mickey out of each other. The news is that they recorded at Jack White's place in Nashville. Yorke describes the studio as tiny and painted red, black and white. White does not normally let anyone in unless he is directing, so, Yorke says, Godrich was directing even though he was not there, having simply told Yorke what to do beforehand.
That turns into a fond interrogation of what a producer actually says, which is very little. Godrich asks for the same take again but better, or says not yet, not yet, and leaves a silence the musician has to fill. Yorke's verdict is that the job is mostly pulling faces, and he demonstrates on camera.
Jack White, it emerges, was an upholsterer, did the upholstery in his own studio, and once recorded a disc and sewed it inside a sofa, so there are records hidden in furniture across America.
