Jonny Greenwood on BBC 6 Music

Jonny Greenwood tells BBC 6 Music News about playing his There Will Be Blood score live at the Roundhouse with the London Contemporary Orchestra, an idea of its leader, Hugh Brunt. For the score Paul Thomas Anderson sent him clips of American landscapes, big skies and bleakness, to write to, and then cut some of the film to the music. At least 50 players will take it on. Away from raked seating the Roundhouse makes people listen differently, and the music needs plenty of space around it. He is more and more obsessed with acoustic sound, with being in the room while instruments play, and less prepared to accept recordings; he loves the strange rush of a rich sound starting out of silence.
Radiohead took a whole year out to travel and are slowly getting back together, all still hungry for new music. He has not heard the old albums for ages, though In Rainbows sounded great when he played it the other day. The band were proud of every record after Pablo Honey, he says. “We just felt like we've done the first one badly.”
