Jonny Greenwood on BBC Radio 5 Live

9 October 2014 · BBC Radio 5 Live · Jonny Greenwood
Jonny Greenwood tells BBC Radio 5 Live why the classical concerts he plays are run like gigs. Orchestras fix their programmes two years ahead, and he remembers a letter in which the young Mozart boasts to his father of an audience clapping after the first few bars. So “people are standing, there's a bar, it's dark”, and Greenwood and the players pick the setlist just before they go on. Boiler Room, an online TV channel where a lot of young people go to find new music, will film one of these concerts, so viewers can see how the sounds are made, with players using things other than bows on the strings, or two bows at once. A festival would be harder, as Radiohead found playing quiet songs over the 808 bass drums from the dance tent next door.
