Philip Selway sits in for Guy Garvey on 6 Music with records by bands he has played with or shared a bill with, and opens on Talking Heads, whose song gave Radiohead their name. “Fortunately they've not asked for it back yet,” he says. Radiohead were petrified at Dublin's RDS in 1997, with Massive Attack on the bill, the week before the Glastonbury that changed things for them. A 2006 night in San Diego with Deerhoof brought an alleged UFO over the stage, and the 2009 South American tour with Kraftwerk ended in a club in Chile, where Ralf from Kraftwerk turned out to have moves. On Radiohead's 1998 tour their support band, Spiritualized, played a show of their own at the top of the World Trade Center, to traders in suits coming off the floor, and somehow it worked.
At Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide in New Zealand in 2001, the first time he had played outside Radiohead, Eddie Vedder sang The Beat's “Save It for Later”, Selway's favourite song of theirs, over the end of “Better Man”, “a musical heaven”. Interviews for his second solo record, Weatherhouse, keep turning to The Bends, 20 years on, and the one thing he remembers clearly is R.E.M. taking them under their wing. He drummed on tables to Killing Joke's “Follow the Leaders”, to his family's annoyance, and the rumoured sessions of the Magic Band, Captain Beefheart's group, locked away 14 hours a day on a cup of beans, sound to him “very much like a Radiohead session actually”.
Seeing Atoms for Peace at the Roundhouse, after two decades sat behind Thom Yorke on stage, he could finally get out front and “see what the fuss was about”. He ends on Tim Buckley's “Sing a Song for You”, which he took for years for one of Yorke's, because Yorke used to sing it in rehearsals and soundchecks.
