Phil Selway on XFM
His Manchester night on the February tour falls on Valentine's Day, which had not struck Philip Selway until the presenter said so.
December 2014 · XFM · Phil Selway
Philip Selway joins XFM's Communion Presents to talk about Weatherhouse, his second album, out since October. Familial was an intimate record; this time he went in with Adem Ilhan and Quinta from his live band, and after Radiohead's 2012 tour he had a clear 2013 and the run of the band's studio, which he calls “pretty jammy actually”. He admits he thrives on a crisis. Some lyrics were left so late that he woke at four in the morning before a ten o'clock session, “thinking I'm going to look so stupid”.
On the February tour he plays with the drummer Chris Vatalaro. Selway won't be on the drums himself, and stays at the front of the stage: “I would feel very intimidated playing in front of Chris,” he says. The Manchester night, at the Deaf Institute, falls on Valentine's Day, which had not struck him until the presenter said so. His choice to play is “Doom”, from Deerhoof's La Isla Bonita, by a band who once opened for Radiohead and were bonkers to watch night after night.
