Philip Selway once worked as a copy editor in medical publishing, knowing nothing about medicine.

Philip Selway drops into 91X's Coachella Flop House in April 2015, with Weatherhouse, his second solo record, out since October 2014.
Work outside Radiohead began with Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide, first in 2001 with Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Marr, then at the end of 2008 with Wilco. Finn's invitation came by email, the kind Selway had to take a deep breath over. He suspects Ed O'Brien put a word in, and he was a fan of Finn's bands, Split Enz as well as Crowded House. He drums from memory. The solo songs came out of Radiohead's downtime, and by his mid-30s he had enough of them, though he had to learn to sing and did not drum on the first record.
The host reminds him that on the Pablo Honey tour the band talked about the Can reissues on air for five minutes before one of them, Ed by the host's memory, asked if they were on the air. At school it was the Clash, Joy Division and two-tone, but he was too scared to go to Coventry to see the Specials. “Nice boy stuck in my bedroom listening to nasty music.” From 14 he told his family he would be in a band. Meanwhile there was college and a proper job, as a copy editor in medical publishing, knowing nothing about medicine. Weatherhouse was made with Adem Ilhan and Quinta over about six months in the Radiohead studio, where nothing else was happening, and Chris Vatalaro, who drums for him at Coachella, makes him shy about drumming.
