Phil Selway on 91X San Diego

On the station's live broadcast from Coachella, around his second solo record, Phil Selway explains how he came to work outside Radiohead at all, which began with Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide. The first, in 2001, brought together Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Marr, and the second, at the end of 2008, grew wider still, with Wilco involved.

The original email was the kind a person has to take a breath before answering, he says. He is amused by the interviewer's framing, which is roughly that somebody phoned the drummer of Radiohead on the assumption he was sitting at home with nothing to do between albums. He suspects Ed O'Brien, who had become close to Finn, of putting a word in, and admits to being a Split Enz fan long before any of it.

The host reassures him that a drummer is allowed to front his own band, citing Dave Grohl, and Selway accepts it with good grace.
