Phil Selway on BBC 6 Music
On Radiohead's 2012 tour Selway got ready for each show by listening to a different castaway from the Desert Island Discs archive.

Philip Selway co-hosts Guy Garvey's Finest Hour live from Manchester Central Library, where an electronic drum kit in memory of Scott Johnson, Radiohead's drum technician, goes into the music library. Johnson was killed when the stage collapsed before a Radiohead show in Toronto; this is the 17th and last kit from the memorial fund in his name. His father, Ken, tells Selway that the fund began with about £1,200 given at the funeral in place of flowers, before Radiohead fans started raising money on their own. A few weeks after the death he returned a call from France, thinking it was a friend in Paris, and found himself talking to Elton John. “He didn't know Scott and he never worked with Scott but he went to the trouble to find my home number,” Ken says.
Selway gives Garvey his first drum lesson, on “Karma Police”, and admits Garvey is his very first student. Stephen Morris of New Order follows with “Ceremony”, which Selway says is one of the very few covers Radiohead have tried, “one that we did actually show ourselves up on quite badly”. Richard Hughes of Keane remembers Johnson making him a drum sprayed the exact green of a car Hughes had bought.
Selway had minded Garvey's chair on and off earlier in the year, and those shows brought out more stories. On Radiohead's 2012 tour he got himself in the mood before each show with a different castaway from the Desert Island Discs archive. The Kid A tent tour is the nearest he has come to camping. While they were still On a Friday they watched Ride take off with some envy, then changed their name, perhaps to sit just ahead of them in the record racks, “not that we're petty or anything”. Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention, whose son was in the support band, doubled their £50 door at the Old Fire Station in Oxford with money of his own. The first time Selway played with Thom Yorke was at a 24-hour school jam, with Colin Greenwood there too, he thinks.
In October, back for one more week, he says he has spent the past month in the studio on a Radiohead session, and that Jonny Greenwood brought into the session the week before a track from Junun, a project of his recorded in India earlier in the year with the Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur.
