Ed O'Brien on BBC Radio 1
Coldplay bringing out Barry Gibb was brilliant, he says, but Radiohead are not that kind of band.
19 June 2017 · BBC Radio 1 · Ed O'Brien
Days before Radiohead headline Glastonbury for the third time, Ed O'Brien tells Annie Mac on Radio 1 that they are honoured and a little nervous; drawing up a setlist for a show in Denmark, they all owned up to the Glastonbury tingles. In 1997 the monitors failed, and about three songs in Thom Yorke came over and said, “I'm going to walk off now.” O'Brien said, “Perhaps not,” and talked him through it one song at a time, to sheer relief at the end. He says there won't be any guest appearances, though by the end of the answer he allows that “maybe there will be something”. Coldplay bringing out Barry Gibb last year was brilliant, he says, but Radiohead are not that kind of band. His advice to first-time headliners is humility. The band on the Pyramid Stage are only closing the night, and “you have to leave your ego and your shades at the gate”.
