Ed O'Brien on GLZ Radio
Music is the greatest detector, Ed O'Brien or Phil Selway says: you can tell when a band doesn't love it.

Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway talk to Israel's GLZ Radio 24 years after Radiohead first came to the country on the strength of “Creep”, and they remember three very hot shows at the Roxane in 1993. “I don't think we'd ever actually had that kind of intensity thrown back at us from an audience before,” one of them says. America, three months later, was intense too, but Israel was first. The record company had question marks over them then, and one of them cried behind his sunglasses on the flight home.
Every show felt like their last, and it stayed that way until they finished touring OK Computer in 1998. No band can keep that up, and OK Computer taught them to let go and let the music breathe. If you don't love it, don't do it, one of them says, because music is the greatest detector: you can tell when a band doesn't love it. At home they were taken for one-hit wonders, and The Bends won people over by word of mouth. Each record since has been asked why it isn't like the last one. “We're not making bricks in the factory for people to buy a house,” one of them says.
