Jonny Greenwood on Alamo Drafthouse

After a screening of Junun, Jonny Greenwood, Nigel Godrich, Shye Ben Tzur and Paul Thomas Anderson take questions from a film critic, with members of the Rajasthan Express beside them, and the evening ends in a performance.

The first question is whether joy was the guiding principle, in a way their usual working lives do not allow. Greenwood says the music is devotional and so uplifting by design, and the atmosphere of the recording followed from that. All of them agree it is not what any of them normally do.

Early in the film someone holds a sign reading have a great time up to the camera. Radiohead's head technician had packed it into a flight case as they loaded out, and it suited a trip on which nobody but their host had any idea what to expect.

Asked whether there is anything Greenwood cannot play, Godrich says there probably is and they have not found it yet. Asked whether locking Radiohead in an Indian fort for three weeks would be as productive, he takes the idea seriously and explains why this worked and that might not.
