Thom Yorke on BBC Radio 6
Asked by Matt Everitt whether he had been offered films before, Thom Yorke remembers being approached to score Fight Club shortly after OK Computer, when he was, by his own description, completely gaga. A script arrived with a letter from the director and Brad Pitt urging him to do it. He said no, and adds that he would not have been allowed to anyway at that point. He thinks about it every time he sees the film.
On horror, he argues there is an enormous overlap between the stranger end of modern composition and this kind of film, since both use a studio to unsettle people and make them feel ill, which he offers as his idea of a good time.
There was never any question of referencing or replicating the original score, he says, because its colour and technique are too strong and too specific.
His son, then 17, plays a drum part on the record, and the political language in one scene arrived while a particular American speech was in the air.
