Thom Yorke on BBC Radio 5
Nihal Arthanayake, frankly amazed to have got Thom Yorke at all, asks whether making something that unsettling was itself unsettling.
Working to a film, Yorke explains, he was answering specific requests, a thing needed here and another there, and never stood back from it. Only when the music was taken off the picture and put together as a record did he hear what was going on in it, and realise he had gone into some very dark places.
That made him feel better rather than worse, partly because he had not known he could do it and partly because he suspects it is something he had always wanted to do without noticing.
He puts the reported difficulty of persuading him down to his own flakiness rather than any doubt about remaking a well-loved film. What convinced him was the director describing the central dance sequence, at which point something clicked about what he could do with it.
He cannot read music, so the work went through the London Contemporary Orchestra and its conductor, and he had always assumed this was the sort of thing he would leave to Jonny Greenwood.
