Phil Selway on BBC Radio 6
After recording Pablo Honey, Radiohead played the Moles in Bath so badly that their managers told a stranger they had never heard of them.
22 January 2019 · BBC Radio 6 · Phil Selway
Philip Selway joins Shaun Keaveny and Matt Everitt on 6 Music before Independent Venue Week, which he is spending on the road for a documentary, a different small venue every day, meeting promoters, gig-goers and artists. He wanted an empty seat beside him in the van so anyone watching would feel they were coming along. It is a white van, and they are being frugal.
He starts at the Moles in Bath, where Radiohead once turned up just after recording Pablo Honey thinking they were pretty special, and were appalling. Somebody asked their managers who on earth this band were, and the managers denied all knowledge before giving them the hairdryer treatment in the dressing room. Then Bush Hall in London, the Leadmill in Sheffield, Leeds and Halifax, ending in Bury, though his memory gives out halfway through the list.
His own Oxford venues were the Jericho Tavern and the Zodiac, where he saw Gil Scott-Heron. Radiohead played only six or seven Oxford shows in their first five years. One of the band once asked for postcards with stamps on the rider, so they could write home before there were mobile phones. Radiohead are taking a little time away this year, and he will be making another solo record.
