6 January 2020 · BBC Radio 6 · Phil Selway

Phil Selway talks to 6 Music about small venues for Independent Venue Week. Promoters make running a small venue their life for little reward, he says, and they are why so many of the rooms Radiohead used to play are still going. The talk turns to what else a venue holds: sound technicians, crew, poster designers and PR people make up a community that goes on to tour with bands or to careers in the music industry. When Radiohead started they played about six or seven shows in Oxford over five years, and had a lot of catching up to do. “It was a very steep learning curve,” he says. “They're really supportive places.”
