Ed O'Brien on BBC Radio 6
Radiohead watched Jimmy Smith at Dingwalls give a young saxophonist grief, though the lad played beautifully, just not Smith's way.

Ed O'Brien talks to 6 Music for Independent Venue Week about two London nights in 1994, while they were making The Bends. Upstairs at the Garage they saw Jeff Buckley play solo, with Chrissie Hynde in the room, and the next day Thom Yorke sang “Fake Plastic Trees”. On a night off with their producer John Leckie they arrived late at Dingwalls for the Hammond player Jimmy Smith, ended up near the front, and watched him give his much younger saxophonist grief, though the lad was playing beautifully, just not the way Smith wanted.
The Roundhouse, where Radiohead have played, is beautiful and well looked after, O'Brien says, and that raises a band's game. In a room with that much history, “you feel it in the walls”.
